Check out this face wearing a white surgical mask, one of the most culturally loaded emoji pre- and post-2020. In Japan, where emoji were born, wearing masks in public was already normal before COVID โ people wore them for colds, allergies, and even as a social buffer. Western users mostly ignored this emoji until the pandemic turned it into one of the most-used symbols on Earth overnight. On Apple, the face underneath the mask looks slightly unwell (flushed cheeks); Google's version looks more neutral. Post-pandemic, it's settled back into "I'm sick" territory for most people, but it carries a lot more weight than it used to.
